THE 2350 YEARS OLD POEM AND THE VIEW ON FEMININITY

THE 2350 YEARS OLD POEM AND THE VIEW ON FEMININITY

“Thunder Perfect Mind” is a riddle monologue discovered among the Gnostic manuscripts at Nag Hammadi, Egypt in 1945. It was written in Greek and determined to be over 2350 years old. Its content revolves around a female divine, possibly Isis, as she speaks of her virtue and exhorts the audiences to attain her. Through its verses and lines, it can  perhaps give us a quick gaze on the perspective that the society had towards women at that time, women as represented in the form of a goddess.

This poem is almost a manual for those who seek understanding towards femininity. Perhaps it is written as an insight of how women would describe themselves, to point out that as now and ever before they are a bit of everything, full of passion and fear, complicated yet painfully simple.

Here are parts of it translated to English.

For I am the first and the last.
I am the honored one and the scorned one.
I am the whore and the holy one.
I am the wife and the virgin.
I am <the mother> and the daughter.
I am the barren one
and many are her sons.
I am she whose wedding is great, and I have not taken a husband

I am the silence that is incomprehensible and the idea whose remembrance is frequent.
I am the voice whose sound is manifold and the word whose appearance is multiple.
I am the utterance of my name.

For I am knowledge and ignoranceใ
I am shame and boldness.
I am shameless; I am ashamed.
I am strength and I am fear.
I am war and peace.

I am the one who is honored, and who is praised.
I am peace, and war has come because of me.
And I am an alien and a citizen.
I am the substance and the one who has no substance.
I am control and the uncontrollable.
I am the union and the dissolution.

Give heed then, you hearers.
For I am the one who alone exists, and I have no one who will judge me.
For many are the pleasant forms which exist in numerous sins,
and incontinencies,
and disgraceful passions,
and fleeting pleasures,
which (men) embrace until they become sober
and go up to their resting place.
And they will find me there,
and they will live,
and they will not die again.
